DUMAGUETE CITY, June 11 (PIA) --- When the pupils of Mabunga Elementary School in Brgy. Mabunga, Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental came back to school for the first day of class on June 6, 2011, they were greeted with a surprise from the 11th Infantry Battalion (11IB) of the Philippine Army stationed in the city.

Troopers from 11IB marked the opening of classes this week by handing out 100 pairs of slippers and school supplies for pupils of said school under the battalion's "Bayanihan Para Sa Kabataan" project.

11IB Commander Lt. Col. Ramil Bitong and his wife, Elizabeth, personally led the distribution of the slippers and assorted school materials such as notebooks, pens, pad papers, and scissors, a statement from the battalion said.

The school's teacher-in-charge, Queenie Arenaza, said the pupils and their parents were delighted with the gesture shown by the 11IB soldiers.

Mabunga Brgy. Capt. Haijie Macalua also reportedly thanked the unit for selecting the barangay as the beneficiary of their "bayanihan" activities.

Earlier, the unit has sponsored a “Libreng Sakay Balik Eskwela” Program during the opening of the classes from June 6-8, 2011.

The troopers also completed the renovation of the faculty room of said school.

Aside from this, the 11IB will also sponsor a one-day educational tour for the school's Grade 6 pupils on June 24 under its flagship program dubbed "Bayanihan Para sa Edukasyon ng Mga Kabataan", a program that aims to promote education as the key to a brighter future and better community.
