Sen. Guingona calls on DILG to probe on unsolved crimes in NegOr
by Jennifer Catan-Tilos
DUMAGUETE CITY, Aug. 19 (PIA) Senate Blue Ribbon Committee Chair TG Guingona to report the unabated crime incidents in the “City of Gentle People” of Dumaguete to Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jesse Robredo.
“Heads should roll,” Senator Guingona said, after a series of 19 unsolved high profile killings in a year in the city and some parts of Negros Oriental.
Senator Guingona was here as the convocation speaker in Silliman University together with former governor Grace Padaca of Isabela for the anti-corruption campaign.
The Senator expressed alarm over the worsening peace and order problem in Negros Oriental, as he said there is a need to put pressure to the chief executive and the police to stop the crime incidents.
Unsolved crimes include the murder of former Miss Dumaguete Ann Rose Bernadette Neri before the May 10 elections, Mass Communications student of Silliman University, an American national, and the latest was the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP)- Negros Oriental Chapter Vice-President, Atty. Archer Baldwin Martinez shot dead in a broad daylight inside his office.
For her part, Grace Padaca said she will recount to DILG Secretary Robredo that the local police in the province have not been strictly enforcing the law.
Padaca revealed that Provincial Police Director, Sr. Supt. Rey Lyndon Lawas was already given one month by Secretary Robredo to solve the prevailing climate of unsettled crimes in the province.
While former Dumaguete City Mayor Felipe Remollo, who accompanied Senator Guingona, said “what is happening boils down to command responsibility, because if the police is not doing his job, his should be replaced.”
However, Provincial Governor Roel Degamo and Dumaguete Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria, issued strong statements condemning the killing.
Sagarbarria said the killing of Atty. Martinez was a shock to the peace-loving residents of Dumaguete, known by the monicker of "the City of Gentle People." (PIA NegOr/JCT)
