NegOr, Siquijor GSP encampment all sets

DUMAGUETE CITY, Sept. 14 (PIA)       The 29th  Council Junior/ Senior/ Cadet Encampment of the Girl Scouts of the Philippines (GSP) Negros Oriental and Siquijor Council opens tomorrow at Camp Lily I. Gamo Sibulan, Negros Oriental with the theme: "GSP Saves Planet Earth.”

The camp's opening ceremonies will be on September 15, 2011 at 4:00 p.m. with Governor Roel Degamo as their guest speaker.

The two provinces of Negros Oriental and Siquijor expect to gather 1,500 Girl Scouts delegates for the four-day encampment.

According to local GSP Executive Officer Rosario Rosales  all sets for the conduct of the  encampment assisted by different committees on physical arrangements, health and sanitation, security and safety, transportation, publicity and promotions headed by over-all chairperson and Negros Oriental –Siquijor Council President, Dr. Profetiza Lim. 

The campers will be divided into the Junior or elementary level, Senior or high school level and Cadet or the college category.

The young scouters are expected to learn some skills to be responsible, progressive, dynamic and patriotic through outdoor activities.

Some of the activities lined up during the event geared towards responding to the challenge of environment, economic self-sufficiency, family life, and emergency preparedness which include adventure games, disaster preparedness, first aid, earthquake drill, waste segregation, tree planting, among others. USS Russell welcomes Cebuanos for onboard tour

DUMAGUETE CITY, Sept. 14 (PIA)   A U.S. Navy destroyer, USS Russell will be anchored off Cebu City this weekend in line with “America in 3-D” program of the United States Embassy showcasing the US in Cebu from September 16-18. 

The U.S. Embassy invites members of the Cebu media for a special tour on board the ship on the afternoon of Saturday, September 17, 2011.

In a press statement by Embassy Information Officer Yolly de Guzman, the tour   provides media representatives with photo and interview opportunities.  News organizations are encouraged to send a maximum of one reporter and one photographer/cameraman to join the tour.

The organizer advised the media who plan to join the tour must be at the Cebu International Port at 1:00 p.m. on September 17, to board a water taxi to go out to the USS Russell for a tour that begins at 2:00 p.m.  The onboard tour expected to last approximately an hour.

The USS Russell (DDG-59) built in 1992, is the second US Navy ship to bear this name.  The original Russell (DD 414) was laid down in 1937, and participated in the liberation of the Philippines in 1944 and 1945.  She saw action in Tacloban, AlabatPoint, San Pedro Bay, and Leyte Gulf.  The ship prevailed in an extraordinary number of battles during World War II, it stated.

The current USS Russell participated in the bilateral Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) exercise in the Philippines in 2004. 

The ship’s home port is Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and its complement of 32 officers and 251 enlisted personnel is headed Commander Joseph Carrigan, Commander Officer, and by Commander Gary Cave, Executive Officer. (PIANegOr/JCT)
