DTI, GIZ set up value chain approach for tourism in NegOr
by Jennifer Catan-Tilos
DUMAGUETE CITY, Dec. 14 (PIA) The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) together with the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) have demonstrated various industries in mapping out the value-chain of tourism in Negros Oriental.
In a tourism forum held recently, both the DTI and GIZ observed that the province has so much to offer in products, sights, and many opportunities to develop and enhance its tourism potentials.
DTI Provincial Director Javier Fortunato said the gathering got to match the small and medium enterprise (SME) sector with local resorts, hotels, restaurants and among other consumers and businesses.
However, GIZ Sr. Regional Coordinator Miriam Bacalso pointed out that value-chain roadmap identifies the path of tourism destinations in the province at the same time discover the best products that will be sold to tourists in each destination.
The approach helps local economic development as it creates linkages and interaction among the suppliers of goods and services and consumers in the municipalities or area, said Bacalso.
The incorporation of locally-made products and materials in resort facilities as an example of a value-chain mapping, cited Bacalso.
It is noted that government agencies and SMED council should significantly work together and integrate services to help enhance competitiveness. This improves the services and its tourism products in the province. (PIA/JCT)

Construction of mini-pier in Dauin town completed
By Rachelle M. Nessia
DUMAGUETE CITY, Dec. 13 (PIA) --- Tourist traffic in Dauin town is seen to go up next year following the recent completion of the construction of a mini-pier in Brgy. Maayong Tubig in Dauin, Negros Oriental.
The port was formally turned over by the provincial government led by Gov. Roel Degamo to the local government unit of Dauin represented by Mayor Neil Credo in a recent ceremony.
The turnover ceremony was witnessed by Dauin’s Sangguniang Bayan members and barangay officials.
The port cost around P5 million to construct, with Gov. Degamo pouring in P2 million to accelerate its completion, said Capitol Information Officer Adrian Sedillo.
“This port is funded entirely by the provincial government,” he said.
Construction of the mini-port was started during the time of then Gov. and now Cong. George Arnaiz in 2003 under the auspices of then Dauin Mayor and now Provincial Board Member Rodrigo Alanano, said Sedillo.
The port is expected to start operating next year. “For now, the Governor wants to add funds to beautify the port and put up cottages and sanitation facilities in the area,” he said.
Sedillo said the port was built to facilitate trips between Dauin town and Apo Island.
Apo Island is a 72-hectare island off the coast of Dauin town and is considered one of the best diving spots in the world.
The point of departure going to the island from the mainland is currently through Dauin’s neighboring town of Zamboanguita, where motorized outriggers take visitors across the sea.
“Since Apo Island is territorially under Dauin, the local government wanted to have a facility built in their area that will ferry visitors and local fishermen and residents going to and from the island,” said Sedillo.
Dauin is a coastal town some 12 kilometers away from the capital city Dumaguete. Its beach resorts and marine sanctuaries have made it a popular destination for local and foreign tourists. (RMN/PIA Negros Oriental)
