Negros Oriental Gov to lift suspension order vs quarry operations
By Rachelle M. Nessia
DUMAGUETE CITY, Jan. 24 (PIA) --- Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo is set to lift the suspension order against all quarry operations in the province.
The move comes in the wake of a recommendation from the Environmental and Natural Resources Division (ENRD) in the province for the resumption of quarrying operations here.
On December 20, 2011, the governor suspended all quarrying operations in the province three days after floods brought by Typhoon Sendong hit several areas in Negros Oriental.
The ENRD office was then ordered to conduct a technical assessment of the rivers in the province, especially those that overflowed at the height of the typhoon.
Gov. Degamo clarified that the resumption of quarrying operations does not include small-scale mining activities and quarrying along Okoy and Banica rivers.
“This means that permit holders may now resume quarrying for sand and gravel operations in areas except Okoy and Banica,” said Capitol Information Officer Adrian Sedillo.
Sedillo said the two rivers are now the subject of rechanneling, dredging and deepening activities undertaken by the provincial government to prevent them from overflowing during typhoons. (RMN/PIA Negros Oriental)
