DAR Negros Oriental hits over 100 percent target in 2011
by Jennifer Catan-Tilos

DUMAGUETE CITY, Jan. 11 (PIA)  The Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) Regional Director Rodolfo Inson has announced that DAR Negros Oriental has exceeded its target by more than 100 percent on Land Tenure Improvement (LTI) in 2011.

Director Inson made the statement during the turn-over ceremony of Provincial Agrarian Reform Officers (PAROs) this week at Plaza Maria Luisa Hotel, Dumaguete City.

Information Officer Aileen Alaban-Villaseca of DAR Negros Oriental said the total target of 2, 645 hectares last year for Negros Oriental including the backlog in 2010, the target exceed by two hectares more with a total of 2,647 hectares or 100.07 percent.

CARP has three major components that include land tenure improvements (LTI), delivery of agrarian justice (DAJ) and program beneficiaries’ development (PBD).

Under the program’s LTI component seeks to secure the tenurial status of farmers and farm workers in the land they till. This is operationalized through land acquisition and distribution (LAD) or Leasehold Operations, said Villaseca.

PBD is CARP’s support services component. It aims to capacitate Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries (ARBs ) and provide them access to necessary support services so as to make their lands more productive, enable them to venture in income generation livelihood projects and actively participate in community governance.

Inson said that this year’s target for Region 7 will reach to 9,000 hectares where the share of Negros Oriental is 4,000 hectares or 60 percent of the total regional target. (PIA/JCT)

By Rachelle M. Nessia

DUMAGUETE CITY, Jan. 11 (PIA) --- The municipal government of Sibulan in Negros Oriental received a financial aid in the amount of P570,000 from the provincial government of Cebu.

Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia personally handed over the monetary aid to Vice Mayor Antonio Renacia and Municipal Disaster Risk and Reduction Management Operations Head Concepcion Rosales on Jan. 10, 2012.

Gov. Garcia visited Sibulan town and some of the typhoon-hit local government units in Negros Oriental along with some mayors from Cebu province.

Vice Mayor Renacia thanked Gov. Garcia for her donation which will be used to help the victims of Typhoon Sendong in Sibulan and the repair of some of the damage infrastructure facilities in the town.

Rosales said the town is still under a state of calamity and will remain so until the displaced families are relocated.

The municipal government is currently taking care of seven families without homes and livelihood, she said.

Sibulan’s Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (MDRRMC) earlier passed a resolution requesting the Sangguniang Bayan to enact an ordinance banning the construction of houses within 20 meters from the riverbanks.

“This is also in consonance with the provision of the Water Code of the Philippines,” said Rosales.

To date, the council has recorded 12 deaths due to the typhoon with 280 totally damaged houses and 322 partially damaged houses.

Rosales pegs the damage caused by the storm on government-owned infrastructure facilities at around P10 million.

The hardest hit barangay is Tubtubon.

The other barangays reported to be affected by the storm are, namely: Looc, Poblacion, Ajong, Bolocboloc, Cangmating, Maslog, Magatas, Maningcao, San Antonio, Tubigon, Balugo, Calabnugan and Agan-an.

“The council still continues with its tasks of rehabilitating the damaged areas, monitoring weather conditions, and making plans for quick disaster response,” added Rosales. (RMN/PIA Negros Oriental)
