DUMAGUETE CITY, March 29 (PIA) -- The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has authorized the only state university in Negros Oriental to offer an Expanded Tertiary Education Equivalency and Accreditation Program (ETEEAP) for three academic degrees in the coming school year.
The Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) in Dumaguete City will start offering the ETEEAP in three academic degree programs, namely: Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication, Bachelor of Science in Criminology, and Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.
The program will be valid for five years, starting school year 2012-2013, said NORSU Information Officer Joy Perez.
ETEAAP is an educational scheme implemented by CHED which allows authorized schools to grant college degrees after assessing and giving credit to an individual's knowledge, skills and prior learning gained from non-formal and informal educational experiences, such as work and seminars.
Perez said the MassComm and Criminology programs belong to the College of Arts and Sciences, while Business Administration is under the College of Business and Accountancy.
CHED awarded to NORSU the Certificate of Deputization to offer said program on March 5, 2012; the award was given by CHED Chairperson Dr. Patricia Licuanan.
Perez said CHED congratulated NORSU, and expressed their hope that the university will, “implement the program efficiently, keeping its integrity and ensuring that quality of learning is maintained, as we provide our working undergraduates the access to higher education through the system of equivalency and accreditation.” (RMN-PIA 7, Negros Oriental)

SU president highlights role of healthcare in nation-building
By Rachelle M. Nessia
DUMAGUETE CITY, March 29 (PIA) -- Silliman University President Dr. Ben Malayang III said healthcare professionals played a vital role in the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
“You have among you experts, decision-makers and individuals of influence. …This is where you can position yourself strategically as professionals equipped with the academic credentials, training, and commitment to patient care,” Dr. Malayang told an audience of nurse professionals during the 9th Annual National Conference of the Asian American Pacific Island Nurses Association (AAPINA) on March 22 to 24, 2012 during his speech in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.
The university president quoted data from the World Health Organization (WHO) which puts nursing and the healthcare professions as “a strategic ally in the achievement of the eight-point MDG.”
WHO earlier reported that the migration of healthcare professionals has led to “severe health workforce shortages” in 57 countries across the globe, with most of them in Asia and Africa.
Malayang pointed out the abundance of nurses in the Philippines and the lack of opportunities for them to “practice professionally and be compensated appropriately.”
He said that one contributing factor to this is the traditionalist view of the profession which finds nurses in the hospital setting only.
“But we know how nurses of today have become. They are products of nurses who are educators and researchers,” he said.
The President concluded his speech with his thoughts on nurses: “You breathe life to an administration of a set of instructions that you have come to memorize from college and work. Without crossing the line and compromising ethics and procedures, you put an extra effort to let your patient feel that like her or him, you too feel hurt and need care, in the same way that you can help in the healing process and the provision of care.”
This year’s AAPINA conference was organized together with the Silliman University College of Nursing Alumni Association International. (RMN/PIA Negros Oriental with reports from Mark Raygan Garcia)

By Rachelle M. Nessia
DUMAGUETE CITY, March 29 (PIA) -- Students in two schools in quake-hit Tayasan town in Negros Oriental received relief goods from the Bacong Holy Family High School Alumni Association recently.
The association handed out about 400 packs of relief goods to almost 400 students of Tayasan National High School and Tayasan Science High School.
Each pack contains two kilos of rice, two cans of sardines, three packs of noodles, one bar of laundry and assorted used clothing, said Nanette Tindoc, president of the alumni association and the provincial focal person of the Public Employment Services Office (PESO) in Negros Oriental.
After the relief goods distribution, Tindoc gave a lecture for the graduating high school students of the two schools on Child Labor and Republic Act 9208 or the Anti-Human Trafficking Act.
Flyers and posters from the Philippines Against Child Trafficking (PACT) were also given out to the students.
Tindoc said their association also gave used clothing items in Guihulngan City, another area badly hit by the 6.9-magnitude earthquake that struck Negros Oriental on Feb. 6, 2012.
The Visayan Forum Foundation (VFF), a non-government organization, has earlier noted a link between climate-caused disasters and human trafficking as illegal recruiters take advantage of the vulnerabilities of disaster victims. (RMN/PIA Negros Oriental)
