DUMAGUETE CITY, April 13 (PIA) -- The provincial search for the The Outstanding Barangay Officials of the Year (TOBOY) in Negros Oriental concluded on April 12 with a series of validation and interviews of the nominees.

The annual TOBOY award of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) is designed to give recognition to barangay officials who have shown exemplary performance in the discharge of their functions.

DILG Provincial Director Jofralito Lorico said the award is categorized into municipal and city levels and each level is composed of punong barangay, kagawad, treasurer, secretary, and Sangguniang Kabataan chairperson.

From the six component cities in the province, 14 barangay officials were nominated and 18 from the municipalities in different categories.

The nominees have been assessed based on their performance or accomplishments, innovations, exemplary leadership, and final interviews.

Of the number of barangay officials who participated in the provincial search, five top-ranking winners in different categories will automatically become the official candidates for the regional TOBOY awards.

DUMAGUETE CITY, April 13 (PIA) -- The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) here gave checks amounting to a total of P624,000 to four barangays in Tanjay City as monetary aid for sugar workers hit by Typhoon Sendong.

A total of 150 sugar workers in four villages benefited from the aid given under DOLE’s Tulong-Pangkabuhayan sa Ating Disadvantaged Workers (TUPAD) program.

The checks were handed over by DOLE officer-in-charge Vivencio Lagahid to the four village chiefs during a turnover ceremony held recently in Tanjay City.

The barangays with the number of sugar workers identified to benefit from said program are, namely: Brgy Manipis with 82, Brgy. Tugas, 26; Brgy. Poblacion III, 16; and Brgy. Poblacion IV, 26.

Brgy. Manipis, being the village with the most number of affected sugar workers, received the biggest share with P246,000 for 15 days of work at a daily rate of P200.

The villages of Tugas and Poblacion IV each received P156,000 and Brgy. Pob. III with P96,000, all of which are good for 30 days of work.

DOLE earlier released P13.02 million for workers displaced by Typhoon Sendong and the 6.9-magnitude earthquake in affected areas in Central Visayas under the TUPAD program.

Funds for the TUPAD assistance came from DOLE’s Adjustment Measures Program and the capability-building program of the Sugar Tripartite Council (STC).

TUPAD aims to help the displaced workers to recover from natural calamities by providing them short-term wage employment as immediate source of income for their day-to-day living.

The financial aid for Tanjay City came after Provincial Board Member Melimore Saycon raised to the STC the concern of sugar workers who were badly affected by the typhoon that struck Negros Oriental in December last year.

“There are more than four barangays here in Tanjay where there are affected sugar workers, but only four villages submitted the complete requirements,” said Saycon during the turnover ceremony.

He assured the captains of the barangays not included in DOLE’s initial funding assistance that the council will also extend assistance to the calamity-hit sugar workers in their villages.

“This assistance will be in the form of goods such as rice packs,” he said.

He urged the village chiefs to be prompt in their compliance with the requirements of government programs that extends aid to disaster victims in their areas. (RMN-PIA 7, Negros Oriental)
