DUMAGUETE CITY, May 12 (PIA)-- Dumaguete City government through the Environment and Natural Resources Office (ENRO) supports the Ocean Month celebration by holding a clean-up on May 12, Saturday at 7:00 a.m.along coastal barangays.
The Ocean Month is celebrated for the month of May for the transformation and preservation of aquatic and marine life.
This is also one way of making the environment life-supportive and ecologically friendly for DumagueteƱos and tourists as well, according to City Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria.
The participants are required to bring with them receptacles such as empty cement bags or plastic bags for the collection and disposal of the collected garbage.
Sagarbarria said this is an opportunity to educate bystanders on what they are doing, so partakers of the activity are encouraged to talk to them and solicit help from them for the good of the environment.
Participants of the activity are the different departments and offices in the city hall, the different barangays and barangay officials of Dumaguete City.
Each department and barangay official has an assigned area to clean up. The target of this movement are the coastal and waterways of Dumaguete City.
Meanwhile, Ocean month is celebrated all over the Philippines, with the theme “Buhay Dagat, Buhay Natin” and “Marine Biodiversity” for International Day of Biodiversity, which highlights the importance of the country’s marine resources in sustaining human life said Environment Secretary Ramon Paje.
