Negros Oriental launches football grassroots clinic

DUMAGUETE CITY, May 3 (PIA) -- Negros Oriental is now organizing a training for young football players through its Grassroots Course and Training Festival. 

Grassroots Development Officer Patrick De la Torre encourages children ages six to 12 to take part in the grassroots development program. 

The program aims to bring every youth to play football games to be future athletes to compete in national sports competition. 

“Grassroots can be played everywhere and by everyone,” said De la Torre. 

For his part, Negros Oriental Football Association (NORFA) president, Dick Emperado said the province can produce competent football players that will represent the province in the national football games through the program. 

NORFA is going to adapt the Grassroots Development Program that trains the youths who are interested in the said sport, said Emperado. 

The program focuses on training the children the basics of football game on dribbling passing and shooting the ball.

Dumaguete City holds Santacruzan

DUMAGUETE CITY, May 3 (PIA) -- The Dumaguete City Tourism Office will hold its Santacruzan Festival on Friday, May 4. 

A Mass celebration at the Cathedral Church will start the event. 

Tourism officer Woodrow Maquiling said his office and the City Tourism Council prepared a series of events that would attract tourists and visitors to come and be a part of the celebration. 

At the same time, these activities will be synced with religious events at the Church, especially novena masses which will be sponsored by city government offices, said Maquiling. 

This year’s Santacruzan Festival, banners the theme “A Celebration of Virtues,” will be filled with activities for the whole month of May. 

The highlight of activities include: 

May 5, 7:00 p.m. - Inter-Barangay Search for Singing Idol at the Quezon Park 
May 5 to 6 - Department of Foreign Affairs Mobile Passporting at the Robinson’s Mall 
May 7, 4:30 p.m. - opening of National Heritage Month at the Robinson’s Mall 
May 12, 7:00 p.m. - Inter-Barangay Dance Competition at the Quezon Park. 
May 20, 8:00 a.m. - Santacruzan Kayak Festival 
May 25, 2:00 p.m. - Heritage Month Indigenous Cultural Show at Robinson’s Mall 
May 25, 5:00 p.m. - inauguration of Dumaguete City Port Island Signage Kasikas and Festival of Lights Display at the Boulevard. 
May 26, 3:00 p.m. - Santacruzan Parade and Streetdance 
May 26, 5:00 p.m. – Grand Festival Showdown and Philippine National Games Opening at the Macias Sports Complex 
May 26, 7:30 p.m. – Kapuso Night at the Quezon Park 
May 31 - Santacruzan Grand Procession. 

Maquiling is inviting the residents in the city as well as neighboring municipalities in Negros Oriental to take part of the Santacruzan Festival. 

“We are at present working on this year’s Santacruzan to be a big event based on the sharing of creative ideas between church and state, lending talent, time, and effort to each other, which in the end will mean a grand but meaningful celebration of this time-honored Filipino festival,” Maquiling added.
