Dumaguete City turns over a school building to city high school

DUMAGUETE CITY, June 20 (PIA) -- Dumaguete City has turned over today another one-storey school building with two classrooms to the Dumaguete City High School in Barangay Calindagan.
Dumaguete City Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria led the turnover ceremony, which was also attended by second district Congressman George Arnaiz, Governor Roel Degamo and Department of Education (DepEd) Dumaguete City Schools Assistant Superintendent Dr. Emigdio Omictin.
Sagarbarria said the project was started by the late Governor Emilio Macias II, when the staff of the Dumaguete City High School requested to the city government the completion of the said building, and he then immediately allocated funds for the building with the help of Congressman Arnaiz and the province of Negros Oriental.
“Unya nahuman naman ning unang andana nga building, ato na pud hangyoon si Congressman Arnaiz na humanon ang second floor ning maong building ug Governor Degamo (Because the first storey has been completed, we will again request Congressman Arnaiz to complete the second floor of the same building also also to Governor Degamo),” Sagarbarria said.
The mayor added that the city government will continue and improve the delivery of educational services in the city and help the Department of Education’s aim of providing quality basic education.
The turnover was also witnessed by the barangay officials of barangay Calindagan, teachers, and students.

Forum set on educating children with disabilities
DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental, June 20 (PIA) -- The Great Physician Rehabilitation Foundation (GPRehab) in partnership with the American Studies Resource Center (ASRC) of Silliman University will hold a forum on “Educating Children with Disabilities: Sharing of Experiences” on June 26 at 1:00 pm at Silliman Library.
American Professor from the University of Texas at Austin, Dr. James Patton will share the American experience in educating children with disabilities while for the Philippine educational setting will be tackled by representatives from the Dumaguete City and Negros Oriental Divisions of the Department of Education.
“We take pride in inviting Dr. Patton to be in Dumaguete City to raise the awareness of the community about inclusive education and how essential it is to achieving Education for All,” shared Analou Suan, GPRehab Executive Director.
Patton is currently an independent consultant and Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Texas. He has taught students with special needs at the elementary, secondary, and postsecondary levels of schooling.
Dr. Patton's primary areas of professional activity are transition assessment and planning, life skills instruction, adults with learning disabilities, teaching science to students with learning problems, and the accommodation of students with special needs in inclusive settings. He currently serves as a mental retardation forensics specialist in death penalty cases throughout the country.
Meanwhile, Rolando Villamero Jr., GPRehab Coordinator of Program of Inclusive Education (PIE), will talk on “Educating Children with Disabilities: The Legal Bases.”
Parents of children with disabilities, persons with disabilities (PWD) sector, academic institutions, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Education, provincial and city local school boards and education advocates in Negros Oriental will participate in the forum.
“We hope that Dr. Patton’s presence in the city will change the perception of the people about disability and we will be given access to quality, relevant and education that is based on justice and equality,” expressed Abegail Alviola, a grade 6 child with visual impairment enrolled in a regular class in Liptong Elementary School.
