TESDA ‘specialistas’ make 100 news stands for nat'l daily

DUMAGUETE CITY, June 21 (PIA) -- A group of welders in Negros Oriental recently produced 50 newsstands for one of the largest national daily newspapers in the country.
The welding fabrication group from Sibulan town composed of 10 skilled workers trained and certified by the Technical Education Skills Development Authority (TESDA) earlier obtained a contract of work from national daily newspaper Manila Bulletin for the construction of 100 magazine stands costing P850 each.
The group of ‘specialistas’ – which is what TESDA-trained and certified skilled workers are called – is led by 36-year old Ruben Ramirez who was an insurance agent before he signed up for a skills training under the 2011 Training for Work Scholarship Program (TWSP) of TESDA.
Ramirez personally negotiated with Manila Bulletin for the fabrication work to be awarded to his group.
The group received on March 20 a partial payment of P47,075.90 for the completion of the first 50 racks ordered by Manila Bulletin.
This comes as a relief for Ramirez’s group as one of the hardest services to sell is metal fabrication.
According to Charisma Binondo of TESDA office in Negros Oriental, Ramirez and his fellow TESDA-trained welders have to compete for jobs with welding shops and contractors that are “everywhere and very active” in the province.
“Our marketing strategy was to give away flyers and post advertisements. It was a big help for the other aggrupation but not enough for the metal fabrication services,” she said in a report released to Philippine Information Agency.
The racks produced by the Ramirez group for Manila Bulletin were built at the Cebu Science of Welding and Skills Technology, Inc. (CSWSTI), the TESDA-registered training center where Ramirez and his fellow welders graduated.
Binondo said that while the welders were fabricating the stands, they were guided by CSWSTI President Romelito Mantuhac who served as the group’s mentor. “He let the Specialistas use some of the facilities at the center to hasten the fabrication. He also gave them points on how to run their business and assisted them in producing the right quotation for their proposal,” she said.
The welders said they are grateful for the training they received through TESDA as this helped them augment their income and improve their quality of life.
Ramirez and his group members are now waiting for the second advance payment for the production of the remaining 50 newsstands. (RMN/PIA 7, Negros Oriental)

NegOr state university to mark 8th charter day
By Rachelle M. Nessia
DUMAGUETE CITY, June 21 (PIA) -- The only state university in Negros Oriental will celebrate its 8th charter day anniversary on June 25 this year.
This will mark the conversion of what was then a state college, Central Visayas Polytechnic College, into its current state university status as Negros Oriental State University (NORSU), through Republic Act 9299, according to NORSU Information Officer Joy Perez.
Activities for this year’s anniversary celebration include a thanksgiving mass, all-university academic convocation, and lunch fellowship for faculty, staff, administration, and guests.
Dr. Peter Dayot, NORSU vice president for planning, research, and international linkages, said an entertainment program will follow the lunch fellowship at Bethel Guesthouse, dubbed the “NORSU 8th Charter Day Anniversary Celebration After Lunch Show.”
Dayot said the show will showcase the theme, “Great Women in History, What You Don’t Know About Them.”
During the show, there will be raffle draws and talent offerings from NORSU’s two main campuses in Dumaguete City and its satellite campuses in Guihulngan, Bayawan-Sta. Catalina, Mabinay, Bais City, and Pamplona.
Perez said a finale number will involve a spoof by the “Panakot Girls,” namely Craig Refugio as Imelda Marcos, Warren Gemino as Cory Aquino, Michael de la Peña as Regine Velasquez, Dindo de la Peña as Tina Turner, Jeremiah Perez as Queen Elizabeth, and Carlou Bernaldez as Pilita Corrales.
NORSU’s current president, Dr. Henry Sojor, is the first president of the state university, from August 19, 2004 to July 12, 2008, after the University’s Board of Regents passed a resolution approving Sojor’s reappointment. (RMN-PIA 7, Negros Oriental)
