By Jennifer C. Tilos
DUMAGUETE CITY, Aug 3 (PIA) -- Around 1,200 residents and barangay officials of Barangay Tayak of Siaton town signed up in a campaign adopting two provincial resolutions on the promotion of peace, security, and development.
In a grand barangay assembly, town mayor Alber Ator led a signature campaign supporting the provincial resolutions nos. 5 and 12 which regulates the conduct of medical and fact-finding and the creation of Barangay Defense System (BDS).
The adoption of the resolutions followed as a result of the educative measures being conducted by the army Peace and Development Workers (PDW) on the effects of the armed struggle on the lives of the people in the place, 79th Infantry (MASALIGAN) Battalion Commander, Lt. Col Marion Sison said.
In the same gathering, eight militia members of the South East Front-Komiteng Rehiyon-Sentral Bisayas (SEF-KRSB) took a stand and publicly denounced the illegal armed groups and their dubious fronts meddling with the peaceful life of the people of Tayak while they simultaneously took an Oath of Allegiance to the government, Lt Col Sison said.
Before each one of you think of giving anything in support to the armed rebels, think first of yourselves and of your own son's and daughter's future, Ator said in a message during the same campaign.
On the other hand, the people are now moving on to a higher and a more free state of understanding.
After finally realizing the fate which awaits them if they continue to put themselves unwilling subjects to the armed group's machinations, I am happy they are now practicing their inherent rights of governing themselves to ensure a more peaceful living, Sison added.
Sison said the resolutions, upon taking effect will be of great help to the barangay in the aspect of security as these may serve as a deterrence as well as a hindrance to organizations of dubious intent to the people. (mbcn/JCT-PIA7 Negros Oriental)

By Jennifer C. Tilos
DUMAGUETE CITY, Aug 3 (PIA) -- The Negros Oriental Network of non-government organizations and people’s organizations (Negornet) linked up with the provincial government of Negros Oriental to support the latter's disaster risk reduction activities.
In a press conference for Negornet's 9th Annual NegOr NGO & PO Week from August 1 to 6, Negornet President Msgr. Merlin Logronio said NGOs can provide skills and material resources to assist the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) during calamities.
During a recent workshop, Negornet has identified service areas for training and educational campaign in the barangay level where civil society organizations can assist the local government units (LGUs) in disaster preparedness.

Negornet executive director Greg Fernandez Jr. said the member-NGOs can provide volunteers during evacuation, relief and rehabilitation, and as resource persons during pre-disaster training.
Logronio said barangays will be taught how to reduce risks of natural hazards by employing important measures to predict, plan, prepare, and practice, focusing on its own community-based early warning and communication systems.
With 27-member NGOs and POs, Negornet is involved in various collaborations with the provincial government in promoting good and effective governance and development, said Fernandez.
