FAN election campaign for PWDs launched
By Jennifer C. Tilos
DUMAGUETE CITY, Sept. 7 (PIA) -- About a hundred persons with disabilities (PWDs), and local government and non-government organization leaders gathered for the launch of the Fully Abled Nation (FAN) voter awareness campaign at Silliman Hall, Dumaguete City.
FAN is part of a three-year Disability-Inclusive Elections program of AusAID to intensify advocacy campaign on the participation of PWDs in the 2013 elections, said project officer Bernadette Cariaga of AusAID.
The Australian government supports FAN to achieve equal rights of PWDs and other marginalized groups to participate in accessing education and voting, Cariaga added.
On the campaign launch, The Asia Foundation director for programs, Maribel Buenaobra, cited the need to collaborate among the stakeholders in the electoral process to increase PWD-voters registration.
“PWDs’ concerns are on the accessibility to polling stations and presence of sign language interpreters to enable them to exercise their right of suffrage,” said Buenaobra.
The Asia Foundation official said around 10 to 20 percent of the country's population are PWDs and only half of them were able to vote in the May 2012 national elections.
For his part, provincial Comelec supervisor, Atty. Eddie Aba, said through this campaign, the Comelec issued Resolution No. 9485 for the Commission and Elections and local government units to establish an accessible polling place for the May 13, 2013 national and local elections.
The event provides the venue for representatives of disabled peoples organizations, the Comelec, the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting with Msgr. Julius Heruela; Provincial Administrator Arnel Francisco representing Governor Roel Degamo, and other concern sectors addressing some issues related to registration and voting of PWDs.
