By Jennifer C. Tilos

DUMAGUETE CITY, Sept 25 (PIA) -- Persons with Disability (PWDs) from several city public high schools participated in the "Art for Peace," a T-shirt painting competition on September 22 in a mall in Dumaguete City.

Capt. Anacito Naz, Philippine Army’s public information officer, said of the 48 students that joined the contest, 13 were PWDs.

Naz added that the activity is part of the month-long activities in September in support of the "National Peace Consciousness Month" as proclaimed in Presidential Proclamation Number 275 in 2004.

“Although less privileged and some have disabilities, the participants did a great part in the promotion of peace in their own little way,” said Naz.

The students expressed their support by conceptualizing a design in line with the theme for the year’s peace month celebration “Ikaw, Ako, Tayo, Magkakaiba: sa Kapayapaan Nagkakaisa.”

The activity was organized by different stakeholders in Negros Oriental composed of non-government organizations led by Oriental Negros Children’s Advocacy Network, local government units, the police and army with the of the Provincial Peace and Order Council.

The winners of the art competition were: Kim Brian Villamil, first place, from Saceda Youth Lead High School in Barangay Candua-ay, with a P1,500 cash prize; Nick Lester Gadingan, second prize, from Silliman University Extension Program in Siaton, with P1,000 cash prize; and Rogelio Angeles, third place, from Little Children of the Philippines High School in Barangay Clay town Daro, with P600 cash prize.

Naz said the cash prizes were given by the governor of Negros Oriental, trophies were from Dumaguete City Tourism Office; the venue was provided by the Robinson Place management.

“The activity was successful and once again it was proven that everybody can have an active participation in the promoting peace,” Naz said. (mbcn/JCT-PIA7, Negros Oriental)

By Rachelle M. Nessia

DUMAGUETE CITY, Sept 25 (PIA) -- A total of 25 families living along Canaway River in Brgy. 3, Siaton town were evacuated last night due to flooding.

The local government of Siaton evacuated the families after the river’s water level rose and overflowed due to the rains brought by Typhoon Lawin, Capitol Information Officer Adrian Sedillo said.

The affected families were temporarily sheltered at the municipal gym where they spent the night.

They were brought back to their respective homes early this morning, said Sedillo.

“The provincial government has today extended food packs to the affected families to augment the relief goods being done by the Siaton government,” he added.

Barangay 3 is one of the critical flood-prone areas in Siaton town.

In 2009, at least 17 families were evacuated from the barangay due to flashfloods at the Canaway River.

Overcast skies and moderate to heavy rains persisted over the province in the past few days due to Typhoon Lawin.

Latest Pagasa weather report showed the typhoon was spotted 585 kilometers east of Baler with maximum winds of 195 kph.

Governor Roel Degamo reiterated his call for people living along rivers and other low-lying areas in the province to be alert of possible floods and landslides. (RMN/PIA Negros Oriental)
