By Jennifer C. Tilos

DUMAGUETE CITY, Dec 20 (PIA) -- More than 1,300 service firearms of police personnel of the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Negros Oriental are simultaneously fastened with tape on the muzzles in a ceremonial sealing today.

Police Supt Alet Virtucio, deputy provincial director for operations of the PNP said each local government unit-police station provincewide has done its procedural sealing.

Virtucio said that in the provincial headquarters, over 100 issued handguns and rifles were also sealed with masking tapes and signed by the PNP provincial director.

The police service firearms are taped to ensure that officers would not fire them indiscriminately during the New Year celebrations.

This is a deterrent to the policemen that they should not illegally fire their guns during the New Year and to protect civilians from any untoward incidents, said Col Virutcio.

Each unit chief has to sign the seal on the firearms and this will be checked by the end of the celebration to determine whether the order has been complied with, he said.

The PNP enjoined both the policemen and the civilian residents to welcome the New Year with merriment without the use of guns. (FCR/JCT/PIA-Negros Oriental)
