Anti-Child Labor Award for Teachers Search
by: Jennifer Catan-Tilos

DUMAGUETE CITY, Apr 18 (PIA) More than 10 teachers in Negros Oriental will be chosen this year for the 2nd Gawad Anti-Child Labor Award for Teachers (ACLAT) through ABK 2 (Pag-aaral ng Bata Para sa Kinabukasan) of World Vision Development Foundation.

ACLAT seeks to give special recognition to teachers, adult para-teachers, and little teachers, who have made remarkable contributions in preventing and eliminating child labor practices through education, said ABK2 Negros Oriental Education Officer Claire Suzette Cabugnason-Du.

The award pays tribute to teachers who made significant practices and contributions in bringing child laborers back to school in their areas,” Cabugnason-Du said.

In 2009, a total of 4,800 children save from the worst forms of child labor in Negros Oriental were back in school provided with direct educational assistance by World Vision under the ABK Child Labor Initiative.

The children come from Bayawan and Bais cities and Mabinay, areas covered by ABK2, were given school supplies such as pencils/ballpens, papers, notebooks, art materials, bags, uniforms, shoes/slippers, raincoat, and umbrella in time for the opening of classes.

The child beneficiaries from the three target areas of the province are mostly from the sugarcane, commercial agriculture (corn), and domestic help who as early as seven years old engaged in the worst forms of child labor.

Two years ago, statistics showed that Central Visayas was ranked second largest numbers of child labor cases in the country, accounting for 9.7 percent of the children engaged in child labor next to Southern Tagalog which has the highest percentage of working children at 11.5 percent.

With some of these alarming reports and concerns encompassing the basic rights of the children, this ABK Initiative has undertaken to respond to this immediate problem by World Vision in partnership with Christian Children's Fund, The Educational Research and Development Assistance Foundation, In., Plan Philippines and some other concern institutions.

ABK2, now on its second phase, was led by the World Vision Development Foundation and funded by the United States Department of Labor. It specifically aims to combat child labor through education in the Philippines. (PIA NegOr/JCT)
