Jobs fair, medical mission slated for Labor Day in NegOr

DUMAGUETE CITY, April 19 (PIA) --- Hundreds of job seekers in Negros Oriental are expected to take part in a Jobs Fair scheduled by the Tripartite Industrial Peace Council (TIPC) of Negros Oriental on May 1, 2011 at the Negros Oriental Convention Center, Capitol Area, Dumaguete City.

The Jobs Fair will mark the local celebration of Labor Day on May 1 spearheaded by TIPC together with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA).

Kenric Villaluz of DOLE here said that nearly 19 agencies recruiting for overseas jobs coming from Manila and Cebu are expected to participate in the jobs fair, along with around five recruitment agencies for local employment.

Simultaneous with the jobs fair is a medical mission that will be held at the Lamberto Sports Complex, a stone's throw away from the convention center.

Prior to the start of the jobs fair and medical mission at around 9:00 am is a Mass will be held at 7:00 am followed by a short opening program in front of the sports complex.

Villaluz said the jobs fair is an activity held regularly here to mark Labor Day in the province. The theme for this year's celebration is "Matuwid na Daan Tungo sa Kaunlaran Para Sa Lahat." (RMN/PIA Negros Oriental)

 Soldiers to trek to Mt. Canlaon for the environment

DUMAGUETE CITY, April 19 (PIA) --- Troops from the 3rd Infantry Division (ID) of the Philippine Army (PA) based in Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental will brave the pounding summer heat, steep climbs and thick forest not to wage war but rather for a more non-violent cause: environmental protection.

Soldiers of the 11th Infantry Lapu-Lapu Battalion under the 3rd ID will hike to one of the most active volcanoes in the country, Mt. Kanlaon in Canlaon City for a three-day trek starting May 13 to 15, 2011. 

The hike organized by the battalion will be participated in by representatives coming from the Governor's Office, Canlaon City local government, local tourism offices, Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) cadets, Department of Education (DepEd), Dumaguete Press Club, Sentinel Mountaineering Society and other local government and non-government organizations. 

According to 11th IB Commanding Officer Ramil Bitong in a letter addressed to the Dumaguete Press Club, the activity aims to promote local tourism and enhance environmental protection and preservation. "This will be highlighted by a tree-planting activity and cleanliness drive along the trails," wrote Bitong in the letter. 

Based on the activity itinerary, the climbers will set up camp on May 13 in Canlaon City and on May 14, they will make their way to the trek's jump-off point at Brgy. Pula, ascend to Canlaon Summit then descend to Margaja Valley where they will set up camp for the night. The following day, the group will depart for Mapot, Brgy. Malaiba and end their trek at Brgy. Mabigo. 

Mt. Kanlaon is the most imposing landmark in the Negros Island and the main attraction for tourists and mountaineers in Canlaon City. Soaring 2,415 meters above sea level, it holds the highest peak in Central Philippines, making it a major climb for experienced climbers. (RMN/PIA Negros Oriental)

Dumaguete City set to host BCBP convention

DUMAGUETE CITY, Apr 19 (PIA) Dumaguete City expects to welcome some 3,000 delegates of Brotherhood of Christian Businessmen and Professionals (BCBP) to attend the 31st national anniversary celebration on May 6 & 7, 2011.

The two-day gathering is expected to perk up the local tourism as well as open business interests since most attendees come from all over the country and abroad, BCBP Chair Leo Cabrera said.

The local tourism office has coordinated the organizer in planning out some tourism activities and destinations for the visitors to promote the city as well as the province’s tourist sites, arts and culture.

 Cabrera said some of the delegates are arriving ahead on May 4 to savor the amenities and pleasantries of Dumaguete and the neighboring towns and cities.

 “It is observed that all hotels and some tourist resorts are already fully booked for participants of the national celebration of the BCBP,” he said.

In a statement of the BCBP said, the annual celebration calls all members to focus on Christian service in fulfillment of its mission wherein businessmen and professionals can experience Jesus Christ in a meaningful way.

President Aquino to declare Valencia as Agro-Industrial
Economic Zone

DUMAGUETE CITY, Apr 19 (PIA) Trade and Industry Secretary Gregory Domingo has recommended to President Benigno Aquino to declare the five hectare industrial park of the town of Valencia as Agro-Industrial Economic Zone to be known as Valencia Special Economic Zone.

The Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) has already passed a board resolution declaring the area located in Barangay Palinpinon as Valencia Special Economic Zone. PEZA promotes the establishments of economic zones in the Philippines for foreign investment.

Secretary Domingo, in his memorandum addressed to President Aquino, a copy of which was forwarded to Valencia Mayor Enrique Gonzales, recommended to issue a Presidential Proclamation to officially declare the site as special economic zone.

The PEZA has approved the creation of the Valencia Special Economic Zone in Barangay Palinpinon, Valencia Negros Oriental last March 30.

A PEZA declared economic zone will ensure investors of world-standard facilities and   support services.

The Valencia Hydraulic System Technologies, Inc., engage in the production of underwater equipment, is the first company to operate in the economic zone.

The local government of Valencia which hosts the geothermal facility of Energy Development Corporation took the initiative of establishing its industrial park in a bid to generate more livelihood and work opportunities for local folks.

The town has been identified by the government as a suitable site for micro-industrial companies as it provides electric subsidy to its electric consumers.

The project is already 40 percent complete and is expected to be finished before the end of the year. Half of the funds used for the development of the project will come from Royalty Tax while the remaining will be from borrowings. (PIA NegOr/JCT)

NegOr PNP launches COPS ON BOARD

 DUMAGUETE CITY, Apr 19 (PIA)     The Negros Oriental Provincial Police Office (NOPPO) has launched today the “COPS ON BOARD” program at the Provincial Convention Center.

Under his initiatives to deliver the basic public safety services to the community, Provincial Director Col Rey Lyndon Lawas of Philippine National Police (PNP) said the program enhance the security of the traveling public as well as the drivers and conductors.

The program is a proactive security measure to thwart any criminality on board public utility vehicles and provide added safety and wellness while traveling, PSr/Supt Lawas said.

Dubbed as “Cops on Board,” the initiative includes the putting up of police hotline numbers in every bus for any citizen could seek police assistance through telephone. The phone numbers are provided by the leading telecommunication companies here.

Of the more than 141 buses under the Vallacar-Ceres Bus liner plying the route around Negros Oriental, Administrative Manager Ryan Baylosis said the police will be on board throughout the trip to ensure road safety.(PIA NegOr/JCT)

NegOr Gov to city cops: Police your own ranks

DUMAGUETE CITY, April 19 (PIA) --- Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo today challenged the 78 cops from the Dumaguete City Police Office who completed their week-long back-to-basics training to "police their own ranks."

The governor told the newly-trained policemen to keep in mind their "complex and sensitive" responsibility to the community during his speech at the graduation ceremony of the refresher course at the Negros Oriental Convention Center today. 

Degamo in his speech lauded the Philippine National Police (PNP) for conducting refresher courses for the policemen. "Learning is a continuing process and this is why we need to hold trainings like this," he said. 

He cited the need for the police force to keep up with the times and the changing technology in fighting crime. "With the advent of the new technology, the criminals are also getting 'high-tech' with their methods so we need to upgrade ourselves in the form of trainings," said Degamo. 

Dumaguete City Police Sr. Insp. Eduardo Oira, who also attended the refresher course, said that the back-to-basics training has re-kindled his passion for police work. "It renewed our enthusiasm to protect the community," he said. 

The recent graduates in Dumaguete City are the fourth batch to complete the said training. Cops from Dauin, Tanjay City and Ayungon have completed their back-to-basics trainings earlier. (RMN/PIA Negros Oriental)
