NegOr SMEs strengthen thru IT

DUMAGUETE CITY, May 31 (PIA) A total of 16 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Negros Oriental trained to promote its craft, food and hospitality industries in the worldwide web.
The Department of Trade Industry (DTI) in cooperation with Philippine National IT Standards Foundation Inc. (PhilNITS) held recently project Training Enhancement for Competitiveness in Harnessing Innovative Entrepreneurs (TECHIE) for SMEs.
DTI officer Jose Julio Somido said, to help local SMEs in Information Technology (IT) enable them to connect easily and economically to outside contacts to promote their products and services for worldwide exposure.
Aside from learning on effective online brochures and bulletin, DTI also trained SME-participants on effective designs, layouts and proper combination of color, text and images under the phase 3 of Project TECHIE.
Somido said the Project TECHIE is an independent project that sets itself apart from the other government projects with parallel objectives to enhance competitiveness of SMEs thru technology trainings and global presence thru website promotion of products and services.
The Techie’s project implemented four phases include Basic Computer Literacyand Applications Training, Promotion and Marketing: Internet-based Marketing, Electronic Brochures Bulletin, E-Commerce Applications and Market Research and Intelligence thru Technology Applications.
The training also aims to strengthen market promotion and market research through the use of available technology applications and develop regional centers as training providers for IT-enabling of SMEs and MSMEs. (PIA NegOr/JCT)

Dumaguete City Hall worker cited for arresting bag snatcher

DUMAGUETE CITY, May 31 (PIA) --- An employee from the Dumaguete City Engineer's Office received a commendation from the Dumaguete City Council yesterday for his courage and gallant deed that led to the arrest of a bag snatcher.
The council, in a special session held May 31, handed over a resolution of citation to Laureano de la Pena, for his “high sense of responsibility” that, according to the citation, clearly attest to the Dumagueteno's willingness to help and commitment to live up to the city's moniker as “City of Gentle People.”
At about 7:00 p.m on May 3, the victim, a certain Emelinda Bullard of Zamboanga City, was inside a restaurant along Rizal Boulevard, this city, when she fell prey to a snatcher who took her bag that was placed on an empty chair and dashed out of the restaurant.
According to PO1 Joesanne Magalso of the Dumaguete City Police Station, the victim's call for help caught the attention of de la Pena who immedately ran after the snatcher and caught up with him along Ma. Cristina Street where he placed the culprit under citizen's arrest. “At this point, a call was made at the station for police back-up and cops were dispatched to the area and the snatcher was brought to the police station,” said Magalso.
The victim, after recovering her bag, decided not to press charges against the snatcher, added Magalso.

Meantime in behalf of the Provincial Director Col Rey Lyndon Lawas of thePhilippine National Police (PNP), Information Officer PO3 Edilberto Euraoba III emphasized his message the importance of giving value to country’s heritage left by the forefathers and significant role in preserving it as it brought pride and honor to Filipino people.
Euraoba encouraged the children to participate in any activity that help develop the sense of responsibility and take ownership of that responsibility being the hope of the nation.

ONCAN’s 300 children mark country's heritage

DUMAGUETE CITY, May 31 (PIA) About 300 children of Oriental Negros Children's Advocacy network (ONCAN) have participated in some traditional gamesdubbed as “Magdula Ta” in celebration of the National Heritage Month.
ONCAN initiated different traditional games for the children to value local sports and create sportsmanship among the players.
More than 10 domestic games have been played which include kayukok, patinero, siatong, bulan-bulan, sepak takraw, bao-bao, bato lata, luksong tinik, takarang, sud-sud, takyan, taksi, among others.
ONCAN President Baby Jambora said, before the game started, different government agencies and non-government organizations joined the fun run led by Provincial Governor Roel Degamo running around the main streets of Dumaguete City.
With the efforts of some member networks, Jambora said a collaborative painting competition also conducted for some youth-participants of the children's network at Robinson’s Place.
The Philippine Army and other NGOs assigned to bring easels, plywood, bagul for mixing paints and other materials to be used by poor children-participants.
The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) member Kitty Taniuguchi of Mariyah Gallery form part of as one of the judges of the painting contest. The works of the children are now exhibited at the gallery.

ONCAN is an umbrella organization of NGOs working for and with children in the province which cater mostly to the needs of children at risk; street children, orphans, children in conflict with the law, children with disabilities and those who come from disadvantaged families which aim to educate on the importance of the healthy environment for children.
