PNoy to inaugurate “Mercado de Bais”

DUMAGUTE CITY, September 5 (PIA) -- President Benigno Simeon C. Aquino III is scheduled to visit Bais City of Negros Oriental on September 7, 2011 to inaugurate the town’s public market complex known as “Mercado de Bais”.

The project was started on December 16, 2009 and completed on September 6 this year with a total funding of P265 million from the local government unit (LGU) of Bais City. The initial funding of P220 million was the LGU’s loan from the Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP) while the additional P45 million comes from the City Government itself.

With a floor area of 11,000 sq. meters, Mercado de Bais is a two-storey market complex with a cold storage facility, ice maker and Underground Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) in the Ground Floor, and a function room of 200 persons, dining room of 100 persons, transient room and Child minding area in the Second Floor.

It is located along the National Highway, bounded by Mabini Street at the North, Aguinaldo Street at the South, and Roxas Street at the West.

The new public market is seen to enhance its services and its viability as one of the city’s major economic enterprise.

Meanwhile, the Department of Agriculture has also lined up activities for PNoy’s visit in Bais City. These include turn-over of three units of 7-horsepower diesel engine Shallow Tube Wells with pump for the Pump Irrigation System for Open Source (STW-PISOS), five bags of registered rice seeds for community-based production to barangay officials, ten bags of registered corn seeds (open-pollinated white corn, IPB Var6 variety) to barangay officials, printed IEC materials on various crops, and assorted vegetable seeds for “Pinakbet” (PIA-Dumaguete/RAC)

Negrense to lead Asian youth program

DUMAGUETE CITY, Sept. 5 (PIA) --- The National Youth Commission has picked a Negrense as the National Leader during the 38th Ship for Southeast Asian Youth Program (SSEAYP) that will take 29 young Filipino leaders on a cruise around Asia.

Adolf Aguilar has been selected to lead the group of 29 total youth ambassadors from the Philippines onboard the cruise liner MS Fuji Maru from October 26 to December 16.

Aguilar is a Bachelor of Science in Education major in Social Studies and Southeast Asian Studies graduate of Silliman University, Dumaguete City. He currently works as the division information communication technology coordinator at the Department of Education (DepEd) provincial office.

Aside from Aguilar, another Negrense youth, Regina Clarina Elmaco, have also made the cut of SSEAYP youth participants.

Elmaco is a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Student Government officer in St. Paul University of Dumaguete (SPUD).

SSEAYP is a diplomatic and cultural exchange program among emerging youth leaders in Asia sponsored by the Government of Japan.

More than 300 young delegates from Japan and the ten ASEAN member states are expected to participate in this program to promote and strengthen friendship and cultural understanding.

For fifty-two days, the delegates visit six ports of call, namely: Philippines (Manila), Brunei Darussalam (Muara), Indonesia (Jakarta), Malaysia(Port Klang) , Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh) and Japan (Tokyo).

During ports of call, the delegates will interact with the local youths and will be on a homestay program and pay courtesy visits on dignitaries and institutional visits in order to learn more about other Southeast Asian cultures and traditions. (RMN/PIA Negros Oriental)

DA holds training course for NegOr agri technologists

DUMAGUETE CITY, Sept. 5 (PIA) --- The Department of Agriculture (DA) is holding a five-day specialized training course for corn agricultural technologists coming from the local government units in Negros Oriental.

The training starts today, Sept. 5, and will end on Sept. 9 at the Tirambulo Highland Resort in Mabinay town, Negros Oriental.

Personnel from the DA-Regional Field Unit 7 Regional Crop Protection Center in coordination with the local agriculture office are spearheading the training, according to Provincial Agriculture Office Information Officer Nittz Bangay.

Bangay said the training aims to capacitate the technologists with new techniques and updates in growing corn and methods to identify pests and diseases. "They will learn how to diagnose deadly aberrations among corn plants and control pests from attacking," she added.

The technologists are also expected to undergo a practicum to put to test the inputs they gained during the training. (RMN/PIA Negros Oriental)
