DUAMGUETE CITY, Feb. 6 (PIA) --- A tricycle driver in Dumaguete City was awarded for his honesty after he turned over a cell phone a passenger left inside his pedicab to the Traffic Management Office on Feb. 2, 2012.
Driver Miller Rio Janayan, who drives pedicab number body 1026, received a P1,000 cash award from the owner of said cell phone, Carminda Arevalo.
Arevalo is the Acting Deputy Executive Director of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP).
The NHCP official rode in Janayan’s pedicab when she visited Dumaguete for the unveiling and turnover to the city government of the historical marker of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal.
Janayan only noticed the mobile phone, a Blackberry, that Arevalo left inside his tricycle when it rang.
“I did not answer it but I immediately went to the TMO to turn the cellphone over to them so they can return it to the owner,” said Janayan.
TMO personnel returned Arevalo’s cellphone to her. Before leaving Dumaguete for Manila on Feb. 3, the NHCP official left with the TMO staff a cash reward for Janayan placed inside an envelope.
TMO Chief Danny Atillo said the cash award was handed over to Janayan at the office of Dumaguete City Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria who witnessed the turnover along with City Tourism Officer Woodrow Maquiling, Jr.
Mayor Sagarbarria expressed admiration for Janayan’s honesty, saying that he is an example to the other tricycle drivers in the city.
The Dumaguete Information Office quoted the mayor as saying that Janayan proved that ordinary people are capable of doing “extraordinary deeds for the betterment of society.” (RMN/PIA Negros Oriental)

Tayada sa Plaza returns to Dumaguete’s Quezon Park
By Rachelle M. Nessia
DUMAGUETE CITY, Feb. 5 (PIA) --- Dumaguete City’s most popular cultural show returns to the stage today, Feb. 5, after nearly three months of absence from the local limelight.
Dumaguete City Tourism Officer Woodrow Maquiling, Jr. earlier announced the return of Tayada sa Plaza, a weekly cultural event that has been staged every Sunday afternoon at the Quezon Park for the past ten years.
Tayada sa Plaza showcases the numerous talents and skills of students coming from the schools in Dumaguete City.
However, the show failed to make its weekly appearance starting October last year due to the city government’s preparations for the annual charter day and fiesta celebration held every November.
“The preparations demanded the attention of everyone so the Tayada was not staged,” said Maquiling.
The tourism officer assured that the show will make its grant return today with the St. Louis School-Don Bosco as the performing school.
Maquiling, who was just appointed as the new tourism officer this year, said the show will come back with a new twist to it, making it livelier and merrier.
“This time, the City Tourism Council is thinking of providing themes for every quarter of the year which will be the basis of the schools’ performances.
The Dumaguete City Information Office said the show is “a manifestation of the strong spirit of partnership between the private sector and the government” while providing a venue for local youths to harness their skills. (RMN/PIA Negros Oriental)
