DUMAGUETE CITY, May 26 (PIA) --- The provincial government of Negros Oriental recently bought two bomb-sniffing dogs to boost the anti-crime and anti-terrorism drive of the Negros Oriental Provincial Police Office (NOPPO).
The two K-9 dogs, a two-year old Belgian Malinois and a yellow Labrador, are trained to sniff bombs and seen to boost the anti-criminality campaign of the province.
The dogs were formally turned over to NOPPO on Wednesday through Provincial Police Director Col. Edward Carranza in a ceremony in front of the Capitol building.
Capitol Information Officer Adrian Sedillo told the Philippine Information Agency that the provincial government spent P600,000 to acquire the dogs at P300,000 for each K-9.
The amount was taken from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management fund for anti-terrorism measures.
“The amount is also inclusive of the dogs’ one-year supply of dog food, sustenance, vaccination and a specially made cage for them,” said Sedillo.
During the turn-over ceremony, Col. Carranza said the bomb-sniffing dogs will boost the provincial police’s anti-criminality campaign.
Gov. Roel Degamo allotted funds for the dogs’ acquisition after NOPPO submitted a request to him for the purchase of anti-terrorism and anti-crime equipment.
Aside from the bomb-sniffing dogs, the other requests are for a bomb x-ray unit, bomb basket, bomb suits and an explosive and ordnance vehicle.
Sedillo said the governor already set aside funds amounting to P8 million to grant NOPPO’s requests. (RMN/PIA Negros Oriental)
