NegOr, DENR lead activities for Environment Month

DUMAGUETE CITY, May 28 (PIA) -- The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR-7) with the Negros Oriental government, spearhead this year’s Environment Month celebration with a series of activities under the theme, “Green Economy: Does it include you?”
The activities start with a short program during a provincial government employees’ flag ceremony of which Provincial Governor Roel Degamo and Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer (PENRO) Eduardo Inting will be the guest speakers on June 4.
In time for the opening of classes on June 4, public and private schools are expected to initiate school-based activities such as “Oplan Linis” to take part in cleaning up school premises.
On June 6, the Philippine Information Agency (PIA)-Negros Oriental will hold a multi-sectoral Kapihan sa PIA forum with DENR-7 regional executive director Maximo Dichoso, governor Roel Degamo, and city mayor Manuel Sagarbarria as guest-panelists to tackle environmental issues and concerns.
More than a hundred participants are invited to the Kapihan which include all the chairpersons of the environment committee and environment and natural resources officers (ENRO) of local government units (LGUs), Provincial Environment Desk Officers of the Philippine National Police, religious groups, academe, media, environmental advocate-NGOs and government agencies.
On June 16, Dumaguete City through its ENRO plans to hold a massive civic action day for a citywide clean up activity. The clean up drive will also be simultaneously done in all cities and municipalities encouraging the local resident to participate in the activity.
The academe specifically Foundation University will organized a big fun run and walk for the environment on June 23. The fun run involves not only the students from all schools in the city but also from the barangays led by the Metro Dumaguete Road Runners Club.
The runners and those who like to walk are assigned to a place where they can pick up or gather some trash especially plastics along the roads to promote environmental consciousness among the public.
One of the highlights of the celebration is an ‘Environment Summit for a Green Economy’ to be participated by groups of fishers, farmers, barangay population development officers provincewide of which the Environment and Natural Resources Division of the province plans to invite DENR Secretary Ramon Paje as keynote speaker on June 26.
