DUMAGUETE CITY, July 2 (PIA) -- An archer from Silliman University (SU) will be representing our country to the Olympics this month.
SU’s Office of Information and Publications (OIP) announced in a statement that Mark Javier, a graduate of the university’s Bachelor of Science in Information Technology in 2005, is now officially part of the 11-member Philippine archery delegation to the Olympics in London.
The 2012 Olympics will open on July 27 at the Olympic Stadium in east London.
According to SU-OIP Director Mark Raygan Garcia, reports from the International Archery Federation indicate that Javier landed fifth place in the seventh World Archery Federation Cup after he defeated Russia’s Jan Rijavec (7-3) and Denmark’s Bjane Marius Laursen (6-2).
The World Archery Federation Cup is the last leg for the archery qualifying games. “Only the top seven placers of the competition advanced to the Olympics,” he added.
Garcia said this is not the first time Javier made it to the Olympics. In 2008, he was the lone Filipino archer in the Beijing and made it to the quarterfinals.
Silliman University has on its roster three Olympians, including Javier, in the field of archery.
The first two are Lisa Ygnalaga (Seoul Olympics, 1988) and Jennifer Chan (Sydney Olympics, 2000). (RMN/PIA7 Negros Oriental)
