By Rachelle M. Nessia

DUMAGUETE CITY, Nov. 21 (PIA) -- The Metrobank Foundation has launched the Search for Journalists of the Year (JOY) to recognize excellence in Philippine Journalism.

Metrobank partnered with Probe Media Foundation (PMFI) to celebrate and honor distinctive Filipino journalists from print, television, radio, and online media “whose excellent storytelling has contributed to the development of the nation.”

Founded in 2001, it was then known as the Search for Outstanding Journalists. Among the awardees then were Sheila Coronel, Armando Malay and Jessia Soho.

“Their body of work inspired reforms in the workings of media in the Philippines,” said PMFI Executive Director Yasmin Mapua-Tang.

The search is an open nomination-based process, which means anyone can nominate their best bet to the search.

Journalists that will be nominated must be Filipino citizens currently residing in the Philippines, and have been working in the media industry for at least ten years, practicing any medium (print, television, radio, or online) of journalism in the country on a regular basis and as a primary source of income.

Journalists’ work to be submitted as material for evaluation by the Selection Committee must: a) have undergone strict journalistic processes of research, coverage, data gathering, production, editing, vetting and publication or broadcast; and b) have been published or broadcast by bona fide local, national, or international media outlets or organization.

Deadline for submission of nominations is on or before January 31, 2013. Guidelines and nomination forms are available on www.mbfoundation.org.ph or www.probefound.com. (PIA-7 Negros Oriental)

By Rachelle M. Nessia

DUMAGUETE CITY, Nov 21 (PIA) -- Department of Education (DepEd) officials have met with Gov. Roel Degamo and provincial government department heads to discuss preparations for next year’s Palarong Pambansa.

Among the points tackled were sports and billeting facilities that need to be augmented as raised during the evaluation phase by a Paralong Pambansa.

The facilities that are needed include air-conditioned billeting quarters for athletes and coaches, showers in the bathrooms, additional toilets, transportation needs, security, stable internet connection and playing venues.

Additional playing venues will also be opened since Gov. Roel Degamo and DepEd officials are eyeing to hold all the Palaro games within Dumaguete City.

“Kon kini matuman kini maoy pinaka-unang higayon sa kasaysayan sa palarong pambansa nga naa lamang sa usa ka dapit ang mga dula sa palaro (Should this happen, this will be the first time in the history of Palarong Pambansa where all the games are held in one locality),” said Capitol Information Officer Adrian Sedillo.

A total of P15 million was initially allocated for the preparation and improvement of sports and billeting facilities that will be used for the Palarong Pambansa.

Sedillo said the provincial government intends to start its preparations early to make the province’s hosting of the Palarong Pambansa next year "a memorable and successful activity.

Negros Oriental earlier won over Negros Occidental in the bidding to host next year’s Palaro.

This is the first time the province will be hosting the national sports event which is expected to bring in more than 15,000 athletes-delegates and guests from 17 regions nationwide. (RMN/PIA-7 Negros Oriental)
