Silliman stude tops 21st PSQ provincial competition

DUMAGUETE CITY, Nov 17 (PIA) –- Ruby Busita, a BS Accountancy freshman student of Silliman University (SU) was adjudged the provincial winner in the recently concluded 21st Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) held at Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) recently.
First runner up was Ramil Espere Jr, a BS Geology of NORSU coached by Normina Batucan. Colegio de Santa Catalina de Alejandria (COSCA) student Tristan Ted Abunal won as 2nd runner-up.
Contestants from SU and COSCA were coached by Emelyn Coniendo and Joemert Endam, respectively.
National Statistics Office (NSO) Provincial Census Officer Ariel Fortuito said the three provincial winners will represent Negros Oriental in the regional level PSQ on November 20 in Cebu City.
Fortuito said the PSQ is a contest designed to test college freshmen students on their knowledge and application on statistics.
A total of 12 contestants in this year’s competition from different universities and colleges in the province that include SU, NORSU, COSCA, Foundation University, AMA-Dumaguete, ACSAT, and Maxino College.
The 21st PSQ is conducted nationwide among freshmen students enrolled in colleges and universities in the 17 regions of the country.
At stake for the winners in the PSQ National Finals are cash and trophies, among others. All regional champions will also be awarded during the National Finals with a PSQ medal and a certificate of recognition.
Their respective coaches, the college or university where they are currently enrolled, as well as the high school where they graduated from, will likewise be given certificates of recognition.
The Philippine Statistics Quiz is an annual contest which started in 1992 and has been endorsed by the Commission on Higher Education since 1994. (mbcn/JCT-PIA Negros Oriental)
