Negor jail to bolster deteriorating perimeter fence
by: Rachelle M. Nessia
DUMAGUETE CITY, May 13 (PIA) -- The provincial government of Negros Oriental has recently released P4.5M to bolster the perimeter fence of the Negros Oriental Detention and Rehabilitation Center (NODRC).
Retired Col. Nicolas Noble, who sits as the provincial jail warden, said that construction work on the fence is seen to start around the first week of June as the provincial government is now in the procurement process for the fence materials.
The new and improved fence, which will feature security barriers and steel gates, will be built around the old fence that has slowly deteriorated over the years. "The jail's perimeter fence right now is already dilapidated and this poses a big risk to our security," said Noble in an interview with Philippine Information Agency.
There are currently a total of 206 inmates incarcerated inside NODRC.
The construction of a new perimeter fence is one of a long "wishlist" submitted by Noble to the provincial government for the improvement of the provincial jail.
Based on the results of a security survey inspection conducted at NODRC last year, the Provincial Engineer's Office in a development plan pegged the amount needed for the jail's infrastructure needs at around P27-M.
Noble said another P1,361,832 is needed for the purchase of equipment such as base radio, power generator, emergency lights and fire extinguishers.
The jail warden is also requesting the procurement of prisoners' van to transport inmates to the courthouse during hearings. (RMN/PIA Negros Oriental)
